His military service took him to Hawaii, but after four years, he returned to New York City with a desire to make something of himself. This desire led him to the William Morris talent agency, where he started in the mailroom.

Wally Amos quickly climbed the ranks at William Morris, becoming the first Black person to hold the title of a junior agent in 1961. In 1975, with encouragement from his Hollywood friends and a $25,000 loan from Marvin Gaye and others, Wally Amos opened the first Famous Amos cookie shop on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. The shop was an instant success, raking in $300,000 in its first year. Wally’s cookies, known for their distinctive taste and quality, soon became a nationwide sensation.

By 1981, Famous Amos had grown into a $12 million company, with multiple locations and widespread distribution across the United States. Wally Amos became a recognizable figure, known for his signature Panama hat and infectious smile. He even made appearances on popular TV shows like "The Office," "Taxi," and "The Jeffersons."

Challenges and Resilience

Despite the rapid success, Wally Amos faced challenges in managing the financial side of his business. By 1988, he had to sell his ownership and equity in Famous Amos due to financial difficulties.
