Team Canada Unveils Men's Basketball Roster for Paris 2024 Olympics
Canada's Senior Men's National Basketball Team has qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after a historic performance at the FIBA Men's Basketball World Cup 2023. The team secured their Olympic berth with a thrilling 88-85 victory over Spain and went on to win a bronze medal, the first for Canada in a men's basketball World Cup. Dillon Brooks set a FIBA World Cup record with 39 points in the bronze medal game against the United States, leading Canada to a 127-118 victory.
Canada’s roster features 11 NBA-experienced players, including captain Kelly Olynyk, who plays for the Toronto Raptors and has been part of the national team since 2010. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, a two-time NBA All-Star, returns to the team after being named to the All-Star Five at the World Cup. RJ Barrett, son of former Olympic captain Rowan Barrett, and Jamal Murray, a 2023 NBA Champion, are also key players. Melvin Ejim joins his sister Yvonne, who is on the women’s team for Paris 2024.
Head coach Jordi Fernández, who led the team to their best finish in 88 years, will guide Canada in Paris. The team's preparation has focused on continuous improvement, with Fernández emphasizing daily progress. The Olympic Games will mark the first time since Sydney 2000 that both Canada’s men’s and women’s basketball teams will compete together.
Canada is in Group A and will play against Greece, Australia, and Spain during the group phase, with all games held at Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille. The elimination stages will be at Bercy Arena in Paris. Team Canada’s Chef de Mission, Bruny Surin, expressed excitement for the team's return to the Olympics, anticipating strong performances and thrilling moments on their journey to Olympic glory.
