For an Italian, cutting out pizza and limiting pasta is no small feat. However, Fabbri was committed to his goal and over the course of two years, he shed 55 pounds (25 kilograms).

This dramatic weight loss was not just about reducing numbers on a scale; it was about enhancing his athletic performance. By losing weight, Fabbri found he could maneuver more swiftly during his shot put rotations, allowing him to generate more power and achieve greater distances.

Diet and Discipline

Fabbri's new diet was a significant shift from his previous habits. He now eats six times a day but only has one full meal—lunch. This meal often includes Bistecca alla Fiorentina, a beloved Florentine steak dish, which he enjoys whenever he is in Florence. “When I’m in Florence, I never miss that,” Fabbri remarked, emphasizing his attachment to his hometown and its culinary traditions.

Despite the challenges, Fabbri’s dedication to his new eating habits has paid off. “It’s not easy. I’m trying to eat only vegetables,” he said. “But when you see the results, you do it more willingly.” His success in transforming his body has led to notable achievements, including a silver medal at the World Championships and a gold at the European Championships.

Mental Fortitude and Inspiration

Beyond physical changes, Fabbri has also focused on strengthening his mental game. He credits his mental coach for introducing him to Buddhism and meditation. Reading books on Buddhism and meditating every morning during competitions has become an integral part of his routine. These practices help him stay focused and calm under pressure.

Fabbri’s athletics coach, Paolo Dal Soglio, who narrowly missed a medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games, serves as another source of inspiration. “I want to win a medal for Paolo, too,” Fabbri said, highlighting the close bond and shared aspirations between coach and athlete.

The Road to Paris

Fabbri’s journey is far from over. With his newfound physical agility and mental resilience, he is setting his sights on the Paris Games. The men’s shot put competition, starting on Friday, will see Fabbri challenging the likes of world-record holder Ryan Crouser and Joe Kovacs, who have dominated the event for nearly a decade.

Fabbri's recent victory over Crouser in the final Diamond League meet before the Paris Olympics and his second-longest mark in the world this year at 22.95 meters demonstrate his readiness to compete at the highest level. Now weighing a more agile 275 pounds (125 kilograms), Fabbri is poised to make a significant impact.

A National Inspiration

Fabbri’s journey is also deeply influenced by the success of his fellow Italian athletes at the Tokyo Olympics. Witnessing Italy’s best-ever track and field performance, including Marcell Jacobs’ victory in the 100 meters and Gianmarco Tamberi’s gold in the high jump, has fueled his determination. “Up until recently, seeing Italians doing well at the Olympics or a world championship seemed impossible,” Fabbri reflected. “So when you see a lot of them doing well, it makes you realize that it’s something possible and it pushes you even more.”
